What we do
Alongside AV Design and consultancy, we are also Senior TouchDesigner developers building real-time visuals, interactive installations and generative content for brands, venues and audiences worldwide.
Conference talk
Recursive Digital at the UK’s first TouchDesigner Conference
A short 15-minute presentation from our team on how we use TouchDesigner and Unreal Engine together, and what that combination unlocks for live, real-time installations.
What we covered in the talk
The presentation walks through our two Puma Arcade builds in North America: New York in 2023, then a significant expansion across three floors of the Las Vegas flagship in 2024, delivered in ten months. Both are driven entirely by TouchDesigner and Unreal Engine, two systems we treat as a pair because they belong together: real-time rendering lives in Unreal where it makes sense, while Touch runs the sensors, lighting, data and operations behind the scenes.
Data and personalisation
Retail experiences get better when the store remembers you. Each gameplay session captures a short name, a score and a series of images, generates a unique QR code, and links to a microsite where players claim an animated GIF of their game. Scan the same code on a return visit and the store welcomes you back with your previous scores. Under the hood: a Postgres database driven from TouchDesigner through the Psycopg library, per-player UUIDs, and WebSockets to and from the microsite. Our tip from the talk: data equals database. Skip the CSVs and go straight to Postgres.
Bridging two engines
Every signal in the building crosses between the two systems: centralised Art-Net lighting driven from Touch, Unreal screen content with OSC back into Touch so lighting states react to players, webcams bridged into Unreal over NDI, QR scanners and joysticks over serial, and arcade machines running both engines on one physical box with carefully tested resource management. One hard-won lesson: local networks struggle with many NDI channels, so we composited every media layer and in-game advert onto a single NDI channel with carefully built UV maps. NDI also hides Unreal level-loading stutter behind a unified UI layer.
Keeping it alive
For us TouchDesigner isn’t just content creation, it keeps the whole system running. A Touch watchdog monitors machine health across twelve machines, restarts a crashed Unreal instance within seconds, emails the team when anything happens, and even watches itself. NDI camera feeds flow into a central monitoring system in London, with hidden diagnostic screens for remote access and TCP/IP-controlled power throughout. The result runs sixteen hours a day, seven days a week, with no technical staff on site.
Test before the building exists
We build every space in VR first and test with the real sensors, three Orbbec units and point-cloud slicing in GLSL to detect ball strikes on an LED wall, long before the venue is ready. For Las Vegas that meant a physical replica in our studio and seven months of testing before the site existed. Physical testing is the ultimate key: when a system has to work around the clock in public, you cannot leave it to chance.
Capability
From flagship retail to international flagship venues, if it runs on TouchDesigner, we’ve probably built it.
Recursive Digital is a UK design studio with 20+ years of award-winning work in audiovisual, lighting, acoustics and interactive content. TouchDesigner sits at the centre of how we build live, real-time experiences, from generative LED content and projection mapping to interactive installations driven by sensors, cameras and audience input.
We work with global brands, retail flagships, museums and venues. We’re hands-on at every stage: we design the system, write the TouchDesigner networks, integrate the hardware, and stay through commissioning and on-site sign-off.

Under the hood
How we build in TouchDesigner.
Anyone can wire up a few TOPs. Building installations that run unattended for years in front of the public is a different discipline. This is what senior TouchDesigner development looks like in practice.
GLSL & compute shaders
When built-in operators run out of headroom, we write our own: custom GLSL materials, compute-shader particle systems and image pipelines that hold frame rate at LED-wall resolutions.
Python extensions & pipelines
Structured, versioned Python throughout: extensions for clean architecture, integrations with APIs, databases and scheduling, and tooling so content teams can update shows without touching a network.
Multi-machine & large canvas
Synchronised multi-node playback for large canvases and distributed installations, with frame-accurate sync across machines and clean failover behaviour when hardware misbehaves.
Protocols & hardware I/O
DMX and Art-Net into lighting, NDI and SDI for video, OSC and MIDI for show control, serial and network links into sensors, PLCs and bespoke microcontroller hardware. If it speaks a protocol, we can talk to it.
Computer vision & tracking
Full skeletal tracking, depth cameras, LiDAR and IR systems feeding real-time interaction, engineered for uncontrolled public spaces with changing light and constant footfall.
Built for 24/7 operation
Watchdogs, automated recovery, scheduled start-up and shut-down, remote diagnostics and logging. Our installations are owned by their venues, not babysat by their developers.
Working with us
Hiring TouchDesigner developers?
If you are looking for a TouchDesigner studio for hire, this is what we do. Brands and venues hire us direct to design and build complete interactive experiences; experiential agencies hire us as their real-time development partner, under their banner or alongside their team.
Engagements run from a single installation or event through to retained development across a programme of work. You get senior developers only, UK-based with global delivery, backed by the AV, audio and hardware engineering to take a project from concept to a commissioned system.
Most projects start with a short conversation about the brief and honest advice on whether TouchDesigner is the right tool for it. If it is not, we will tell you, and tell you what is.

Why Recursive Digital
A UK studio that designs the system, writes the code, and stays through delivery.
UK-based, globally delivered
Headquartered in the UK, with TouchDesigner installations delivered across Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia. The team travel wherever you need us to make it happen.
20+ years, multi-award-winning
Two decades of designing audiovisual, lighting, acoustic and interactive systems for some of the most demanding brands and venues in the world. We are uniquely placed to understand how all of this goes together, and to overlay the magic layer experience over the top.
End-to-end, not just code
We don’t hand off. Our TouchDesigner work sits inside a wider AV, lighting and content system that we design, integrate and commission ourselves.
Common questions
Working with us on TouchDesigner.
What kinds of projects do we take on?
Permanent installations and temporary activations: flagship retail, museums and visitor attractions, brand events, product launches, exhibition stands, concert visuals, architectural LED, and one-off interactive pieces. We work direct to brand, alongside experiential agencies, and as part of larger AV integration teams.
How do we engage?
From a creative brief to a finished system. Concept and creative technology consulting, full TouchDesigner build, hardware specification, on-site commissioning, training your team, and long-term support. Engagements run from a few weeks for an event to multi-year programmes for permanent venues.
What does TouchDesigner integrate with?
DMX/Art-Net for lighting, NDI/SDI for video, OSC/MIDI for show control, sensors and tracking systems (LiDAR, depth cameras, IR), Unreal/Notch for content pipelines, and bespoke microcontroller hardware. Whatever the brief needs, we’ll specify and integrate it.
Are you available for ongoing support?
Yes. Many of our TouchDesigner installations run 24/7 in retail and venue contexts. We provide remote monitoring, content updates and on-site support contracts to keep them performing for years after delivery.
Can we hire you for a single project or a short engagement?
Yes. Plenty of our work starts as a single project: one installation, one event, one prototype. There is no minimum engagement, and a first project is usually the best way to find out how we work.
Do you provide white-label TouchDesigner development for agencies?
We do. Experiential and creative agencies regularly bring us in as their TouchDesigner development partner, working under their banner or alongside their team. We are comfortable in either role and discreet in both.
